At first when I was reading this book, and about the nerdy character Glen, I was questioning the title, Brewmaster of Arabia, and was waiting to find out it was some joke later in the book.
As it turns out, nerdy Glen’s discovery of making psychedelic beer with yeast he developed, does in fact take him on a lifetime of adventures, ending in Arabia.
In the first part of the book we learn of Glen’s Star Trek obsession, and through this he meets his wife, Doris, who is a loving, supportive character throughout the book, happily enjoying the kinky side of Star Trek fandom together.
The story of Glen and Doris covers several decades of their life together – including nearly getting arrested, brewing psychedelic beer, a trip to a space station provided by the government, secret missions through the jungle, and a revolution in Lybia.
Reading this story, I was intrigued, laughing, and enjoyed the trip all the way through. Brewmaster of Arabia is detailed – a bit much sometimes, and you want to keep reading because the story makes up for any slow spots – especially in the detail regarding the mushroom trips – and you have to know what Glen and Doris are going to be getting into next!
Brewmaster of Arabia is a novel that’s jam-packed with crazy mishaps, lots of laughs, and world-changing adventures that keep you turning the pages.
I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys adventurous, funny, and fascinating plots – especially fans of mushrooms and Star Trek. Incidentally, I am neither, and I still enjoyed it enough that I’ll be reading it a second time around.
Kent L Johnson holds a BS in Biology and has worked in Seed Science most of his life. He has also traveled the world and worked in many different jobs where he has clearly gained extensive experience, all of which is obvious in his writing. He has several books and stories published.
