Comic book style heroes, mythological beings, creatures, demons, wizards, and banshees cast shadows and electrify the pages of this book from beginning to end.
Anson is an immortal wizard, who for a time worked as a magician with his wife, while also protecting Titan City from villains on the side.
After a crushing split with his wife almost twenty years ago, Anson is now a snarky cynic—tired of hunting demons and protecting the corruption of the human race—ready to end his own life—when in just five days, during the Aberration, his immortal curse will be lifted for 12 hours.
But, his simple plans are interrupted by a young girl who was sent to him by her mother, pleading for his help and a hellish, soul-consuming being who wants to use him to destroy the universe. Poor guy just can’t die in peace.
Anson cocked back and threw the fist again. “I’ve had just about all I can take this week. I’ve been stabbed, shot, buried in concrete, blown up, chewed on, and wailed at by a banshee. The last thing I need is lip from some bottom feeding demon with a chip on his shoulder. Open this door and let me in.”
The story takes place in Titan City, 1933, and while the author adds a few details regarding the time period, I didn’t really feel it while reading. The time period seems more in regards to fitting in with other historical references than anything else, but it still worked and I enjoyed it.
Thomas’s writing is excellent with exquisite descriptions jumping off the page and pulling you into the story. The pacing is good and keeps you turning the pages. However, the copy of this book that I purchased could use an overall edit—mostly just punctuation and a few words, but it’s prevalent throughout the book. There’s only one part where the actual story line needs an edit.
Otherwise, this book is well worth reading, especially if you like books by Rick Riordan and ML Foreman, or movies like The Adventurer or The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, where the imagination is stretched with rich detail.
The story is so vivid and well-written that I can’t wait to see more from this author!
